Lowel id-light

For many years now the Lowel id light has been widely used in the film and TV industry. It is a strong robust unit, able to take the knocks and rigors of everyday shooting. It has a handy flood and spot function, is fully dimmable and is perfect for wedding photography and location portraiture. Key Features

Small: The Lowel id-light is small and light enough to be easily hand held. The compact design is a triumph of form and function. (barn doors sold separately)

Dimmable: The d in id stands for dimmer. This combined dimmer and switch unit ensures the bulb has a soft start each time you switch it on prolonging it’s life. It also has the more obvious function of giving you ultimate control of the light output level. A dimmed id-light is perfect when lighting people at a candle lit table for instance.

Note: Some play or movement in the dimmer switch knob and circuit whilst being operated is quite normal and doesn’t affect it’s use in any way. Your battery will run for longer if the lamp is dimmed.

Flood and spot control: At the heart of any good battery light is a moveable filament, reflector or lens. Each design produces a slightly different characteristic to the size, quantity and pattern of light emitted. The flood and spot function on the Lowel id-light moves the bubble in relation to the reflector to give a significant range of spot intensity. A subtle diffusion on the lens ensures a pleasing drop off from the lit to unlit part of the scene.

XLR connectors: The Lovegrove supplied Lowel id lights are fitted with a professional 4pin XLR connector. This small, robust, latching inline connector is solid and provides secure electrical connections time after time. Rated at 10A, the 4 pin XLR is simply the best and worth paying a bit more for. Don’t settle for less.

Lovegrove ultra high-capacity lithium-ion battery packs

Every Lovegrove battery pack (18.4Ah) comes complete with a custom-made black canvas shoulder bag. They fit the batteries like a glove, have a comfortable shoulder strap, and they look very smart. Why junior fresnels?

Lovegrove ScatterGels™ are large, custom screen-printed gels designed to create unique lighting effects in the studio or on location. They are specifically for use with continuous lights so you can easily see and manipulate the effect prior to shooting.

The Lupolux 800 HMI spotlight takes about three minutes to reach peak brightness and correct colour temperature, just like a data projector. During this warm up phase the colour of the light will vary slightly. Once lit, the light will continue to burn for as long as you need. Once switched off, the 800 will not ‘re-strike’ for about four or five minutes until the bulb is once again cool. The lamp life is over 12,000 hours and the lights are extremely resilient, so you need not fear about the bulb blowing if switched on while still hot. Unlike other continuous lamps, the outer shell will get no hotter than an average household radiator and the light created will stay as cool as your subject.

The Fresnel Spot Daylight 800 (5600°K)

The Lupolux 800 has a power consumption of 150w and has a light output roughly equivalent to an 800w tungsten light fitted with full CTB gel, hence the 800 in it’s name.

The ‘800’ is the photographers subtle light of choice to be used where an Arri 300w might have been chosen. It has a super wide even light pattern in full flood mode and can zoom into a football sized spot of light at 3m distance. It is silent in operation and perfect for movie making too. You can gel this lamp with a full CTO (colour temperature orange) gel to match a tungsten lit interior and still get the same light output as the Arri 300w unit. The bulbs last a great deal longer too, so in the long term the running cost of this light will be lower than the Arri.

Bulbs
All Lupolux HMI lights come supplied with a bulb. To ensure the safe delivery of bulbs they will not be fitted inside the lamp but wrapped up separately. They are very easy to fit however by simply unscrewing the front casing and inserting the bulb.

Buying replacement bulbs
Some earlier Lupolux HMI 1200 models may require a Sylvania bulb rather than the Phillips bulbs. The bulb you require will be the same brand as that already fitted. So to check your current lamp/bulb brand, undo the screws near the hinge of the lens. If it’s a Sylvania lamp please email us for a quote, if it’s Philips or Osram take a look here for options.

Using the HMI 800 in the USA

The Lupolux 800 will require a step down power converter from 220V to 110V to work in North America. They are quite cheap and easy to find in most electronics store. Alternatively you can choose the DayLED 650 or DayLED 1000 which are auto sensing units that can work anywhere within a 90-240V range.

Useful Notes

Battery Packs
Due the very low power consumption of the Lupolux DayLED lamps they can run on battery power as well as mains power. The lamps can be powered either directly via the in-built 4-pin XLR input sockets on the back of the units (requires a broadcast standard 14.8V battery) or the lights can be powered via a pure sine wave inverter pack.

Plugs
Lupolux lights come with a choice of plug types. Choose between USA 3 pin (plug type B), European 2 pin plus earth (plug type F), or UK 3 pin (plug type G). Read this chart for identification. http://www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/

Lupolux LED lights are 90-240v auto sensing units and so will work in most countries.

Bulbs
The LED bulbs fitted into the DayLED lights are much more reliable than glass bulbs and have a life expectancy of 50,000+ hours, so you will never have to worry about having to replace them.

Why junior fresnels?

Arri Fresnels are the perfect solution in small studios where grid height is a problem. The classic ARRI construction of corrosion resistant extruded and die cast aluminium maximises body strength while maintaining the lightweight of an ideal location fixture.

Despite the small size, short focal length lenses with wider angles give more light output and better light distribution over the full beam area.

PLEASE NOTE: Comes without a plug or a bulb. Bulbs can be bought separately.

TOP TIP: Use a cloth when fitting the bulb into the lamp head. Any dirt or even natural oils from the skin can cause bulbs to blow!

“My all time favourite light source at winter weddings is the Arri 300W Fresnel spotlight. The great thing about working with continuous light is you can see exactly what you are shooting and by adjusting the light focus and barn doors all sorts of light shapes can be created. I usually rig my Arri 300w junior on a stand near the middle of a room. I set my camera to my magic exposure of ISO800, 1/60th second, at f/4 and then call in the bride and groom for a shoot session. Julie and I can usually take 8 or 10 frames in a single room in just a few minutes that will make the album. What are ScatterGels?

Lovegrove ScatterGels™ are large, custom screen-printed gels designed to create unique patterned lighting effects in the studio or on location. They are specifically for use with continuous lights so you can easily see and manipulate the effect prior to shooting.

What these patterned lighting gels do

These gels simply clip onto the barn doors of a continuous light like Lupolux, for an instant lighting effect. By scattering the light into dappled pools of texture you immediately can add depth, drama and life to an otherwise flat looking illumination. Depending on the type of light source you have, will make a difference to the hardness or softness of the pattern created. For those situations where you’d like to soften the pattern we recommend adding your own sheet of frost gel to diffuse the pattern. Simply place the frost over the patterned gel and clip in place.

How to use ScatterGels™

We recommend that ScatterGels™ are only used with cool running continuous spotlights, like the Lupolux LED lights or very low power tungsten lights (below 300w).

Always clip the gels to the edge of the barn doors and leave plenty of air gap. For lights without clips on the barn doors, croc clips are available below. Do not attach directly to the main housing of the spotlight and expect these gels to crinkle a little when used on tungsten lights (eg. Arri 300W) even when clipped to the edge of the barn doors.

These gels are not suitable for: Lowel ID lights, Bowens / Elinchrom / Prophoto or other studio flash heads, speedlights, blonds, red heads. They should also not be used in gel frames that fit behind the barn doors as there will be no air gap and the gel will melt!

What patterns / textures are in the set?

• 1x “Alto” gel 18×16 inch for a soft random cloud-like pattern
• 1x “Crunch” gel 18×16 inch for a random hard-edged dappled effect
• 1x “Splinter” gel 18×16 inch for a dynamic and angular texture in all directions
• 1x “Echo” gel 18×16 inch for a random water-like striped pattern
• 1x “Venetian” gel 18×16 inch for evenly distributed striped pattern replicating the look of light streaming through a venetian blind
